Bengaluru, October 18 (IANS) Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said on Saturday that the traffic system in Bengaluru is in better condition compared to metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi.

Speaking after the Bengaluru City Traffic Police handed over 50 traffic patrol vehicles in front of Vidhana Soudha, Parameshwara said big companies and industries should contribute to the betterment of the people of the state.

“According to the rules, big industries have to spend two percent of their profits on public works. Many companies are working in this direction.”

The minister said that the state government also purchases hundreds of vehicles every year for the police department.

He told that 500 vehicles have been purchased this year.

Earlier, a delegation of police officers was sent to London where the London Metropolitan Police familiarized them with the functioning of its command centre.

“This facility was designed to effectively respond to accidents and emergencies. Inspired by this, a similar command center has been set up in Bengaluru at a cost of Rs 26 crore. The police now respond to any emergency call from people within nine minutes,” he said.

Bengaluru Traffic Police has also launched a new initiative called “BTP Astrum e-Accident” application.

Parameshwara said, “Often, no one responds immediately during accidents, and it becomes difficult to get an insurance claim. To reduce this burden, accident reports can now be filed through the e-accident feature in the app, making the process more convenient.”

He also praised Bengaluru City Police for its effective work in curbing the drug menace.

Recently, drugs worth Rs 24 crore were seized in a single case.

He said the police were regularly visiting schools and colleges to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drugs among students and youth.

He said that due to heavy rains there have been potholes in the city, but repair work is going on.

He remarked that it is not fair to blame the state government for political reasons.

Additional Chief Secretary of Home Department Tushar Girinath, State Director General of Police MA Salim, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemantha Kumar Singh, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Karthik Reddy were present on the occasion.
