Kolkata, November 4 (IANS) A court has sentenced a woman and her daughter to life imprisonment for the murder of elderly woman Sumita Ghosh in Madhyamgram town in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district.
Apart from life imprisonment, Barasat Court on Monday also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on daughter Falguni Ghosh and her mother Aarti Ghosh.
If the fine is not paid, the judge has ordered six months’ imprisonment.
Along with this, he has been sentenced to seven years in jail and a fine of Rs 50,000 on charges of destroying evidence.
After the sentencing, the government lawyer said, “An important aspect of this case is that both of them will have to spend the first seven years in jail. After this, the life imprisonment of both of them will start. That means they will have to remain in jail for their entire life.”
On the other hand, the accused’s lawyer said, “We will go to Calcutta High Court to challenge this decision.”
Last February, Sumita’s mutilated body was recovered from a trolley bag at Kumartuli Ghat in Kolkata.
Mother and daughter came to throw the trolley bag in the Hooghly river.
When the local people saw blood flowing from the trolley bag in his hand, they became suspicious.
Later, locals broke the lock and opened the trolley bag, in which the mutilated body of Sumita Ghosh was found.
Police interrogation revealed that the incident had its roots in Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas.
Nani Sumita had gone to stay at Falguni’s house in South Bireshpalli area.
According to police sources, Sumita was murdered there over a property dispute.
Police had arrested Falguni and Aarti in the murder case.
During the investigation, the police went from Ahiritola to a gold shop located in Bowbazar, Kolkata.
After killing Sumita, the mother and daughter had sold her necklace, earrings, nose rings and bangles in that shop.
Jewelery worth Rs 42 thousand was sold in that shop.
Aarti and Falguni also went to another shop and ordered new jewelery worth Rs 2,53,000.
The investigators found out that an advance payment of Rs 50,000 was made at that shop through online transactions from Sumita’s mobile phone.
