Kolkata, October 18 (IANS) Two youths were killed and three others were injured when their car fell into a ravine near Kurseong in North Bengal’s Darjeeling district on Saturday.
The accident occurred in Tingghumti area along Pankhabari Road. According to police, the vehicle lost control while taking a turn and fell into a ditch.
Kurseong Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek Roy said, “An accident occurred in the morning. Two people died in the incident. Three people were injured. All are residents of Naxalbari near Siliguri. The injured have been sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. The cause of the accident is being investigated.”
The deceased have been identified as Sumit Singh of Naxalbari block and Rajesh Paswan of Kotia holding. The injured – Raj Das and Tarak Biswas of Rathkhola, and Karan Thakur of Kotia Jhot – were rescued and admitted to hospital.
Police said that the five youths had gone for a walk in the hills late on Friday night and were returning home when the accident occurred. Local people informed the authorities immediately after the accident.
Personnel from Kurseong and Garidhura police stations, along with fire brigade, reached the spot and carried out rescue operations.
Singh and Paswan were declared dead on the spot.
Police have started investigating the incident.
The accident comes weeks after a similar tragedy occurred in the hills after Durga Puja, when four people were killed and three were injured when a car fell into a 50-metre deep gorge in the Teesta river near Kalimpong on October 4.
