Kolkata, 8 October (IANS) police on Wednesday arrested two persons in connection with the attack on BJP MP Khagan Murmu in West Bengal. This is the first arrest by the police, 51 hours after the incident, which took place on Monday
According to police sources, two persons have been arrested from Nagkata in Jalpaiguri district. He is now being taken to Jalpaiguri city.
District Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sameer Ahmed said, “Two people have been arrested. Search is on for the remaining accused.” However, the police did not disclose the names of the two arrested. The police did not say anything whether they are affiliated to any political party.
BJP MP Khagan Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh faced protest last Monday when they went to provide relief to the flood affected area in Nagkata.
A large number of people attacked BJP leaders with sticks and shoes. The stones were picked up from the river and thrown into their car. Khagen Murmu faced serious injuries on his face. The two leaders were later admitted to a hospital for treatment. Although Shankar Ghosh was released on Wednesday, Khagan Murmu is still undergoing treatment as he will undergo surgery on his face, and a metal plate is likely to fit on his left cheek.
The BJP had lodged a complaint against eight people at Nagkata police station in Jalpaiguri district and staged a protest outside the police station, seeking action against the accused. However, the remaining accused have not been arrested.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Suvendu Adikari and others paid him a visit to the hospital.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju visited the BJP MP at the hospital on Wednesday. He slammed the Mamata Banerjee government on the attack and said that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has sought an immediate report from the West Bengal government during the attack.
