Kolkata, October 10 (IANS) A teacher from a reputed missionary-run school in Kolkata was detained by Kolkata Police on Friday while he was passing through the road with an air pistol in his bag.
The policemen became suspicious of the teacher’s activities and caught him and later recovered an air pistol from his bag.
He was taken to the local Kalighat police station and interrogated there for about five hours.
Later the police came to know that this person named Debanjan Chattopadhyay is a teacher in a reputed missionary run school in Kolkata.
He is also a member of Shrirampur Shooting Club in Hooghly district and by virtue of that membership he is in possession of an air pistol.
He was also able to submit the necessary papers regarding the legality of possessing an air pistol.
Later, satisfied with his explanation and understanding that he had no evil intentions, the police freed him and let him go.
Chatterjee also confirmed to media persons that the police behavior during interrogation was quite lenient towards him.
In 2023, a youth was caught with a weapon near the Chief Minister’s residence in Kalighat.
The police arrested the youth on the road leading to the Chief Minister’s residence in Kalighat and took him to the local police station.
The incident took place hours before Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee left her home to attend the Trinamool Congress’ annual Martyrs’ Day rally at Kolkata’s Esplanade on July 21.
A city police officer confirmed that Friday’s incident cannot be considered a breach in the chief minister’s security under any circumstances.
