Kolkata, October 15 (IANS) West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose on Wednesday said the state is no longer safe for women.
His comments come amid several incidents of sexual crime against women, including that of a second-year Dalit medical student at a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur in West Burdwan district earlier this month.
He said, “The recent Durgapur rape incident is not just an isolated incident. It is a continuation of a series of crimes happening repeatedly. West Bengal is no longer safe for women and girls, which is indicative of the deeper ill in the society.”
The Governor said that the real strength of a society depends on how safe women feel there. If judged by that standard, it would have to be said that women in West Bengal are living under the shadow of fear today.
He made this comment on the sidelines of a program of the Kolkata-based Chamber of Commerce.
He also indirectly held the ruling Trinamool Congress government responsible for the repeated incidents of sexual crimes in the state.
The governor said, “What we’re seeing now is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a deeper problem underneath it, which is the incompetence of the people responsible for running the system.”
He also criticized the police administration in the state for not taking necessary action in dealing with such cases of sexual crimes against women.
Bose said, “The main function of the people is to maintain law and order in the state. As a governor, I cannot say that the police administration here is working as expected. The current situation in West Bengal is indicative of a ‘soft state’ where enforcing and enforcing legal provisions is not appropriate. The police is not playing the required role in enforcing the law.”
According to him, it is the responsibility of the police administration to maintain law and order and strictly enforce legal provisions.
“The law enforcement agencies are responsible for the violence or anarchy in the state,” the governor said.
