Kolkata, October 11 (IANS) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the gang rape of a second-year medical student from Odisha.
The incident took place on Friday night outside a private medical college in Durgapur in West Burdwan district of West Bengal, where the student studies.
NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written a letter to West Bengal Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar demanding immediate arrest of all the accused, prompt and transparent investigation and medical and psychological support for the victim.
“To ensure effective monitoring, chairperson Archana Majumdar will visit Durgapur to meet the victim and review the police action. The commission has sought an ‘action taken’ report within 5 days,” an NCW statement said.
West Bengal Police has also issued a statement cautioning people against sharing any unverified information in this matter.
Police said, “We are deeply saddened by the sexual assault on a medical student from Odisha in Durgapur and want to assure everyone that the culprits will not be spared. The victim’s pain is as much ours as it is Odisha’s and we will leave no stone unturned in bringing the culprits to justice.”
The state police said that the condition of the victim is improving and all kinds of assistance is being provided to the family.
“We urge everyone to refrain from sharing any unverified information in this regard. West Bengal Police is committed to its zero tolerance policy regarding crimes against women,” the police said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has not reacted to a social media statement issued by her Odisha counterpart Mohan Charan Majhi, where Majhi had urged her to take exemplary action against those involved in the case.
However, the Trinamool Congress had issued a statement saying that while a heinous crime like rape requires strong condemnation and the strictest legislation, the central government has chosen delay rather than duty on the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill.
The Trinamool Congress had said that more than a year has passed since the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill was proposed, but the Central government has done nothing to convert the words into law.
“This is a political choice with deadly consequences,” it said in part.
