Kolkata, Nov 17 (IANS) The West Bengal Governor on Monday evening threatened strict legal action against four-time Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member Kalyan Banerjee over his remarks that arms and ammunition were distributed to BJP-backed goons from the Raj Bhavan.
Following the Governor’s request, a joint search and combing operation was conducted by the Kolkata Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) inside the Raj Bhavan complex in central Kolkata on Monday afternoon.
After search and combing operations yielded nothing, the Governor interacted with the media and threatened strict action as per legal provision against Kalyan Banerjee for her “baseless allegations” which allegedly tarnished the image of the Governor’s chair.
The Governor said, “Making baseless allegations against the Governor has become a trend in West Bengal. It is believed that no action will be taken against any person making such baseless allegations. But now I have decided to take strict action against such baseless allegations. Therefore, in this case too, steps will be taken under the existing legal provisions.”
When specifically asked whether his office would seek the intervention of the Lok Sabha Secretariat in the matter since Kalyan Banerjee is an MP, the Governor said all necessary action would be initiated at the appropriate time.
However, he did not say whether he had discussed the issue with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee or not. “Any conversation between me and my constitutional colleague should be kept confidential,” the governor said.
Speaking to media persons on Saturday, Kalyan Banerjee alleged that the Raj Bhavan was harboring “criminals” of the BJP.
The Trinamool MP also claimed that the Governor should first stop giving shelter to criminals and distributing arms and ammunition to them to kill Trinamool Congress workers. Kalyan Banerjee said on Saturday, “As long as there is an incompetent governor like you, as long as there is a BJP servant governor, you will not see anything good happening in West Bengal.”
