Kolkata, Nov 2 (IANS) The Border Security Force (BSF) arrested a smuggler along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district and seized gold biscuits worth Rs 55 lakh from his possession.
A senior BSF officer said, “71 battalion BSF personnel deployed at Boyraghat border post had received intelligence about an attempt to smuggle gold through their jurisdiction. The men deployed at the post were immediately put on high alert. Around 10 am, they saw a man coming on a motorcycle.”
He said that the soldiers found his activities suspicious and stopped him and conducted a thorough search.
“Two gold biscuits and two small pieces of gold were found hidden inside the footrest of the motorcycle. The man was taken to Boiraghat BOP for questioning,” the senior officer said.
The man is from Pirojpur village in Raghunathganj police station area, near IBB, he said, adding that he was carrying gold smuggled from Bangladesh.
He said that the accused claimed that the motorcycle was given to him by a local person who had to hand it over to another person, adding that when he took command of the motorcycle the gold was already inside the footrest.
The officer said the accused was promised Rs 2,000 for the work, but BSF personnel caught him.
“The weight of the seized gold was 461.29 grams. Its estimated value is Rs 55,35,480. The smuggler arrested along with the seized gold and the motorcycle has been handed over to the concerned department for further legal action,” the officer said.
Lauding the efforts of BSF personnel, he said that the force keeps a close watch on all types of illegal activities along the India-Bangladesh border due to its intelligence network and alert personnel.
