Kolkata, 6 October (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday denied the claims made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week that the deaths occurred on the Darjeeling hills in the northern part of the state, caused by the collapse of a bridge due to the collapse of a bridge.
“The bridge accident in Darjeeling has been deeply saddened by the loss of life in the accident. I have a deep condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I wish the injured rapidly recover. In the context of heavy rains and landslides, the situation in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas is being closely monitored.
However, on Monday, after reviewing the situation in some floods and landslide affected areas in North Bengal, the Chief Minister denied claims by the Prime Minister and claimed that there was no death due to the collapse of the bridge in Darjeeling.
Chief Minister Banerjee said, “There was no death due to the collapse of the bridge.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister increased the demand for the formation of the India-Bhutan River Commission as per the India-Bangladesh River Commission.
CM Banerjee said, “I had raised this demand even before. I also wrote to the Prime Minister on the matter. However, I did not get any response.”
According to the Chief Minister, if water is suddenly released from Bhutan, some districts of North Bengal are affected.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Banerjee also convicted the Hydel Power Project in neighboring Sikkim for floods in North Bengal.
The Chief Minister said, “Bhutan and Sikkim are largely responsible for floods in North Bengal. In addition, there was excessive rainfall within a while. The central government does not provide any funds for flood management,” the Chief Minister said.
