Kolkata, Oct 27 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday, on the occasion of Chhath Puja, called on the people of the state to maintain communal harmony and unity in the celebration of all religious festivals.

Addressing a gathering on the occasion of Chhath Puja on Monday afternoon, the Chief Minister said, “On this occasion, I wish happiness, prosperity and good health for all. We have a tradition of celebrating all religious festivals together. On this occasion, I promise that I will maintain this rich tradition of cultural and religious unity.”

Speaking on the occasion, he also issued a note of caution regarding a possible stampede during the celebrations.

The Chief Minister said, “The challenge is in controlling the crowd and ensuring that everyone can return home safely. Holding areas need to be monitored all the time. When one group goes to worship, the other group should wait. Everyone should follow this rule to avoid any mishap.”

He said that the state government has declared both Monday and Tuesday as state holidays on the occasion of Chhath Puja.

“On this occasion, people join in the festivities with their family members. That is why we have declared state holidays for both the days so that people can join in the festivities. The administration is alert so that there are no law and order problems on the celebration of the festival,” the Chief Minister said.

Speaking further, he asked the volunteers to remain alert.

The Chief Minister said, “If any problem is reported, it should be controlled immediately and if necessary, the public should be informed. Volunteers, police, health department, municipalities and firefighters are working together to ensure the smooth running of the festival.”
