Kolkata, Oct 28 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the BJP of being responsible for the suicide of a man in Panihati in the state’s North 24 Parganas district, allegedly over fear of being affected by the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The body of a 57-year-old man named Pradeep Kar was found hanging at his residence on Tuesday afternoon.

A team from the local Khardah police station reached the spot and recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem.

Police found a diary near his body and a statement written in it, which read, “NRC is responsible for my death.”

An investigating officer said that in the same diary, the deceased had also made some comments about the fear of NRC and those comments ended with the suicide note.

Reacting to the tragedy, the Chief Minister made a social media post claiming that Kar’s suicide was a result of the BJP’s politics of fear and division.

CM Mamata Banerjee wrote in her social media post, ’57-year-old Pradeep Kar of 4 Mahajyoti Nagar, Panihati, Khardaha (Ward No. 9) has taken his own life, he has left a note which reads, ‘NRC is responsible for my death.’ What could be a bigger indictment of BJP’s politics of fear and division than this?”

The Chief Minister had said that this suicide was the result of the BJP’s efforts over the years to harass innocent citizens by threatening them with NRC. “It shakes me to my core to imagine how over the years the BJP has harassed innocent citizens with the threat of NRC, spread lies, created panic and weaponized insecurity for votes,” he claimed.

According to the Chief Minister, people often start doubting their right to exist due to the BJP’s continuous attempts to turn constitutional democracy into a theater of fear.

“Those who sit in Delhi and preach nationalism have pushed common Indians to such despair that they are dying on their own soil, out of fear that they will be declared ‘foreigners’,” the chief minister said in his social media post.

He had also demanded that the Central Government should stop this game forever. He said, “Bengal will never allow NRC, and will never allow anyone to snatch away the dignity or belonging of our people. Our land belongs to ‘Maa, Mati, Manush’, not those who thrive on hatred. Let the landlords of Delhi hear this loud and clear: Bengal will protest, Bengal will defend and Bengal will win.”

BJP state president in West Bengal and party’s Lok Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya has expressed doubts over the real reason behind the suicide.
