Kolkata, Oct 14 (IANS) The BJP on Tuesday questioned the silence of several women leaders of the Trinamool Congress on the Durgapur gangrape incident, who at other times are vocal on issues happening in BJP-ruled states.
In a social media post, the West Bengal BJP asked why Trinamool Congress MPs Mahua Moitra, Sayoni Ghosh, Sagarika Ghosh and Minister of State Shashi Panja remained silent when the rape incident took place in the state.
Speaking to IANS, state BJP leader and spokesperson Shatarupa said, “We see that whenever there is any incident of crime or any other issue in BJP-ruled states, these women leaders become vocal. But what is surprising is that all these leaders are silent when a medical student who came to Bengal from another state to study was gang-raped. We want to know why they are selective in raising their voice. We want to know why they are Why are you silent on the issue?”
Last Friday, a second-year medical student from Odisha was gang-raped by five men in a forest area outside a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur in West Burdwan district. Based on the complaint of the victim, the police have arrested all five accused in the case.
The incident has sent a stir in political circles in the state, with the main opposition BJP targeting the Mamata Banerjee government for failing to provide security to women.
Speaking on the incident, BJP leaders have also criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee when she had said that women should not be allowed to go out at night.
Shatarupa further said that whenever such a big incident happens in other states, the party leaders at least condemn the incident.
“But in Bengal, these so-called Trinamool Congress leaders chose to ignore the matter and did not even issue a message condemning the incident. It is clear from their silence that there is no safety for women in Bengal,” the Bengal BJP spokesperson said.
