Kolkata, Oct 29 (IANS) The BJP has demanded a proper investigation into the real reason behind the suicide of a 57-year-old man named Pradeep Kar in Panihati in North 24 Parganas district, allegedly out of fear of being affected by the possible National Register of Citizens (NRC) in West Bengal.
The BJP had also questioned the timing of the development, noting that a special intensive revision had already been announced, and the ground work for the exercise had begun on November 4.
Amit Malviya, head of the BJP’s information technology cell and the party’s central observer for West Bengal, had said that the cause of the suicide could only be determined by law and investigating agencies and not through political rhetoric.
“Let’s get the facts straight – there is no NRC anywhere in the country. Mamata Banerjee is lying and deliberately spreading panic to create fear among people for political gains,” his statement said.
He had also said that the fear factor of the Trinamool Congress, that the SIR will expose the rot in the West Bengal administration and mark the beginning of the political downfall of the Trinamool Congress, is pushing the state’s ruling party and the Chief Minister to spread such lies.
On Tuesday, both the Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee accused the BJP and the Central government of using the NRC as a tool to spread a sense of fear and division where people often doubt their right to exist, a reflection of which was felt in Kar’s suicide.
The Trinamool Congress leadership is calling the SIR an indirect ploy by the BJP and the Central government to implement NRC in West Bengal.
State BJP leader Sisir Bajoria said that a proper and impartial investigation will reveal the real reason behind Kar’s suicide.
He said that even though the tax may have driven people to commit suicide out of fear, only the Trinamool Congress and the Chief Minister are responsible for it as they are responsible for spreading a false sense of fear among the people by placing SIR and NRC in the same bracket.
Pro-BJP social media influencer and YouTube content creator Sanmoy Banerjee questioned who would decide whether the suicide note recovered from Kar’s body, where he claimed that NRC was the cause of his death, was written by him.
According to him, the ruling party was planning to commit suicide so that NRC could be linked to it.
He also questioned whether any suicide in West Bengal from now on would be linked to the NRC.
