BBC Scotland presenter Nick Sheridan recalls ‘talented, generous soul’ at Irish funeral

The funeral of BBC Radio Scotland presenter Nick Sheridan has been held in his native Ireland.

This award-winning host, Died last week at the age of 32 After a brief illness, his brother Brian described him as “talented and generous”.

“Nick embodies everything that is good in life – family, friendship, creativity and, most importantly, kindness,” he said.

He said friendships were “extremely important” to Sheridan and that every friend he had was “valued and cherished.” The journalist’s siblings added that the family was “extremely proud” of the success of his career.

Mourners gathered at St Ibar’s Church in Castlebridge, County Wexford, on Wednesday to pay their last respects to the journalist and author, who moved to Glasgow in 2017.

He joined first British Broadcasting Corporation In 2018, he worked as a photojournalist, and in 2020 he became BBC Scotland’s consumer affairs correspondent.

The following year, he was promoted to news anchor and taught journalism at Western University Scotland.

Sheridan has also previously worked as a broadcast journalist at STV and as a presenter, reporter and foreign station correspondent at RTE News.

He has presented programs on BBC Scotland including Drivetime and 97 Days, and has written four books, including one on journalism and two children’s books.

His brother told friends and family that Sheridan’s “creativity knew no bounds” and that his fifth book would be released in the coming months.

“He spent every free moment of his childhood typing, hand-distributing local newsletters and writing short stories, all of which contributed to his success as a writer in recent years,” his siblings said.

“He’s as much at home arguing about political correctness with his dad in the kitchen as he is grilling an unfortunate guest on the couch in Seven or Nine.

“Singing and music were Nick’s greatest gifts and whether he was starring in a stage musical or singing in this church at Christmas, his talent shone through and never failed to captivate an audience.”

He said he was “a calming voice” in the family but was also “the one who loved Clark the most.”

“Our family has lost a guiding star, but we are so grateful that Nick was in our lives for 32 years,” he said.

“His star will continue to shine brightly on us and we will never forget what a remarkable person he was and is.”

The BBC Scotland team watched the Mass in a live broadcast organized by his friends.

Following Sheridan’s death, Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yusuf paid tribute to him, describing him as an “incredibly talented journalist and author”.

Former first minister Nicola Sturgeon also described Sheridan as “brilliant, lively and full of potential”.
