According to a Home Ministry statement, the Batadrava Thana Redevelopment Project, inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, December 29, has transformed the birthplace of the great man Srimanta Shankar Dev Ji in Assam’s Nagaon district into a modern spiritual and cultural centre.

Batadrava Than is one of the most important religious places of Assam and has deep cultural significance as the birthplace of saint Srimanta Shankar Dev Ji, who founded the Neo-Vaishnav movement. The redevelopment aims to preserve this heritage while improving facilities for devotees and visitors.

The project covers 162 bighas of land and has been developed at a cost of more than 222 crore, the statement said. The area was previously under illegal occupation for many years, which was cleared and redeveloped as a structured pilgrimage site.

Speaking at the inauguration, Shah said the Batadrava Thana reflects the idea of ”Ek Bharat” or One India through the teachings of Srimanta Shankar Dev Ji. He said that the saint’s message of social unity and cultural harmony continues to guide the nation.

The redeveloped complex now includes improved infrastructure and open spaces designed to support religious activities and cultural events. The project is expected to attract pilgrims from Assam and other parts of the country, thereby boosting religious tourism in the region.

The Home Minister also praised the Assam government for its efforts to free large areas of land from encroachment, noting that more than 1.29 lakh bighas have been cleared in the state. He credited these actions with helping to preserve important cultural and religious sites.

According to the statement, the redevelopment of Batadrava Thana is part of a broader focus on protecting India’s heritage while supporting regional development. The project highlights the government’s effort to link cultural revival with modern infrastructure.

With its renovated facilities and historical significance, Batadrava Thana is now set to emerge as a premier spiritual site in North East India, carrying forward the legacy of Srimanta Shankar Dev Ji for generations to come.
