A New York bartender is facing charges after an 18-year-old hostess died after drinking at the restaurant where the two worked.
On August 4, 2024, Maria Cecilia De Jesus-Garcia consumed an alcoholic beverage while working as a hostess at Adelita’s Mexican Cocina & Tequila restaurant in Victor, a suburb in western New York. New York State Police said.
DeJesus-Garcia was reportedly found unresponsive the next morning after taking an Uber home and was later pronounced dead. 13 slam. Authorities determined her cause of death was complications of acute ethanol intoxication.
A police investigation revealed that the restaurant served alcohol to DeJesus-Garcia when she was under the legal drinking age.
After an investigation that included reviewing the restaurant’s surveillance video, police arrested the restaurant’s 32-year-old bartender, Ariel Ceja, on Dec. 18.
Ceja is accused of providing alcohol to De Jesus-Garcia after closing time. He was charged with criminally negligent homicide, a felony, and unlawful treatment of a child, a misdemeanor.
He was taken into custody without incident.
“As part of the ongoing transition, the District Attorney’s Office is currently reviewing a large number of open cases. This case is among those under review. At this time, it would be inappropriate to comment further. We are committed to carefully evaluating each case and handling it in a manner consistent with the interests of the law and justice,” Acting District Attorney Jason McBride said in a statement.
Ceja is currently being held in the Ontario County Jail. He is scheduled to go on trial next month.
