Moscow:
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday called the concert hall attack that killed more than 100 people a “barbaric act of terror” and vowed severe revenge against all those involved.
Putin said in a televised address that all four gunmen were captured before they had a chance to cross the border into Ukraine.
“I address you today about this bloody, barbaric terrorist attack, whose victims were dozens of innocent, peace-loving people,” Putin said in his first public speech since the attack.
“The four perpetrators of the terrorist attack who shot and killed people have been detained. They were traveling to Ukraine, where, according to preliminary information, they had a transit window,” the Kremlin leader said.
Russia’s FSB security service earlier said the attackers “had contact” with Ukrainians as they tried to flee the country.
On Friday, at least 115 people were killed by armed gunmen at the town hall in Krokus, a suburb on the northern edge of Moscow. The concert hall was set on fire. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, but Russian authorities made no mention of it.
“Terrorists, murderers, non-human beings will face the tragic fate of retribution and oblivion,” Putin said, declaring Sunday a national day of mourning in Russia.
