Kolkata: A Bangladeshi national, who was trying to enter the Bangdubi Army base in Bagdogra in Darjeeling district of West Bengal by posing as a local labourer, was arrested on Thursday.
The Bangladeshi man was identified as Nanda Mandal. Army personnel attached to the base arrested him after finding his activities highly suspicious. Later he was handed over to Bagdogra police station.
A district police insider said that due to some construction work going on at the base, some local laborers attached to a construction contractor reached the Army base. When they were entering the base, Mandal also tried to enter inside by pretending to be a labourer.
However, his activities aroused considerable suspicion among the army personnel on duty. They caught him and started interrogating him. Initially, Mandal tried to trick them by claiming to be a worker attached to the construction contractor.
However, there were considerable inconsistencies in his statements, making the army personnel even more suspicious. Ultimately, he revealed his identity during interrogation and also admitted to being a Bangladeshi citizen. After this he was handed over to Bagdogra police station.
Sources said the police are now interrogating him to know the real intention behind his attempt to enter the military base posing as a local worker. Mandal could not produce any legal documents required to come to India, making it clear that he crossed the border illegally.
He is likely to be produced in the district court on Friday and the government lawyer will seek his police custody.
Recall that in May this year, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel had arrested a suspected Bangladeshi spy Ashraful Alam near Bagdogra Army Cantonment. He was allegedly collecting sensitive information about the area.
During interrogation, Alam claimed to be a former spy of Bangladesh’s main intelligence agency.
