Bangladesh: 9 arrested in violent murder of lawyer, attacks on Hindus continue

Dhaka: At least nine people have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a lawyer during violence in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Police provided the information on Saturday. He was arrested after cases were registered against 46 people, mostly sanitation workers from the minority Hindu community, for their involvement in the murder of Assistant Public Prosecutor Saiful Islam. Islam has a history of about 30 years. Meanwhile, attacks against Hindus continue. The Yunus government in Bangladesh has not taken any steps for the safety of Hindus.

The incident occurred last Tuesday during clashes between supporters of Hindu community leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and security personnel, with nine people arrested for the lawyer’s murder. Previously, a Chittagong court refused to grant bail to Das and sent him to jail. Bangladesh Sanatani Jagran Jot spokesperson Das was arrested at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday in a sedition case. Chittagong police chief Abdul Karim said, “Saif Islam’s father had filed a case against 46 people last night.” Karim said most of the defendants were from Saibok in the city. The colony is home to sanitation workers who mostly belong to the Hindu community. Nine accused have been arrested and raids are underway to arrest others, he said.

Chandan Das named as main accused

Police said the accused had been identified through CCTV footage from the court building, the scene of the November 26 violence. The main accused, Chandan Das, was seen attacking the lawyer with a sharp weapon, police said. The incident sparked outrage across the country, with lawyers and political groups taking to the streets demanding harsh punishment for the Islamist killers, while some groups want ISKCON Bangladesh banned. However, ISKCON Bangladesh said Das had been expelled from the organization long before his arrest and that ISKCON was not involved in the murders or violence. (language)
