Baltimore Bridge Incident: Cargo ship loses power before collision, 6 missing

A bridge collapsed in the city Baltimore, USA, after cargo ship crash Cars and people became trapped in the river below early Tuesday morning.

According to news agency reports ReutersBaltimore officials said at least eight people were thrown into the Patapsco River after the 2.57-kilometer-long Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed into the water. However, the actual number of people who fell into the water remains unclear as search and rescue operations continue.

The container ship “Dali” that hit the bridge was carrying 22 crew members. All crew members are Indian and they are safe.

  • The cargo ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge, one of the busiest bridges in the Maryland port city, at 1:27 a.m. Tuesday (local time).

  • Construction crews were repairing potholes on the bridge when the collision occurred. At least eight people fell into the icy water, two of whom were rescued. One of them was reportedly uninjured, but the other was seriously injured.

    The search for the remaining six continues.

  • Maryland Governor Wes Moore said the cargo ship’s crew notified authorities of the power problems before the accident, which “probably saved many lives.”

    “We’re thankful that between the call for help and the collapse, we had officers who were able to start stopping traffic so there were no more cars on the bridge,” CNN quoted Moore as saying.

  • The White House said U.S. President Joe Biden had been briefed on the collision. The White House said so far there is no indication of malicious intent.

  • Synergy Marine Group, the charter manager of the Singapore-flagged container vessel Dali, said in a statement that all 22 crew members on board were Indians.

    Synergy said the Dali collided with a pillar of the bridge and that all crew members, including the two pilots, were safe.

  • Reuters quoted Maryland transportation authorities as saying that traffic at the Port of Baltimore has been suspended until further notice.
