Garhwa (Jharkhand), November 12 (IANS) The opposition party has expressed a sharp political reaction to the incident of sand smugglers allegedly trying to crush a Block Development Officer (BDO) with a tractor in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district.
Leader of opposition in Jharkhand Assembly, Babulal Marandi has launched a scathing attack on the state government on this issue.
Marandi on Wednesday took to social media to accuse the Hemant Soren-led government of protecting the sand mafia and said “honesty has become a death sentence” under his rule.
Marandi alleged, “BDO Shravan Kumar was on Untari Road in Garhwa district to investigate illegal sand mining when the mafia tried to crush him with a tractor. The BDO and his team somehow escaped, but the police did not take any action against the accused despite reaching the spot.”
He further questioned the government’s failure to ensure the safety of its officials.
“When even government officials are not safe, how can the general public expect security? Who will take the responsibility of security of BDO Shravan Kumar? When the police will stand with the mafia and goons, who will give justice to the people?” BJP leader asked.
The incident took place late on Monday night in Sidha village of Untari Road police station area.
To stop illegal sand mining, BDO Shravan Bhagat (Kumar) was doing late night inspection with his team when he tried to stop an unregistered tractor.
Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly accelerated and drove the vehicle straight towards the officers.
The officer and his team had a narrow escape, but the speeding tractor rammed into a nearby hut, injuring the cattle tied there.
After some time, police personnel reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
On Tuesday morning, the BDO along with the station in-charge inspected the site again.
Police officials said that raids are being conducted to arrest the people involved.
“Action is being taken against the accused,” a police officer said.
