Police personnel were deployed outside Jamia Millia Islamia on Monday as a precautionary measure after a video of two to three students raising slogans like “Strike for Babri” surfaced online, officials said.
The deployment took place on the day of the consecration of the new idol of Ram Lala in the Ram temple in Ayodhya. This temple has been built on the site where the 16th century Babri Masjid stood, which was demolished by a frenzied mob of ‘kar sevaks’ in 1992.
“The deployment of police personnel outside (the university) is a precautionary measure,” a police officer said. He said that this has been done in view of the Ram Mandir consecration ceremony and the upcoming Republic Day. The officer said that apparently a protest was organized inside the campus. The officer said, nothing happened outside.
Jamia Millia Islamia administration said academic activity has not been disrupted due to the “protest”. He said the situation is under control. “It was just two to three students who were engaged in sloganeering. Classes and examinations continued without any disruption,” a university official told PTI.
When asked whether two people have been detained, the police officer said that no one has been detained.
