Kolkata, Oct 22 (IANS) West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose on Wednesday reacted strongly to the attack by a home guard on a female junior doctor at a government hospital in Howrah district adjacent to Kolkata earlier this week, claiming that attacks on doctors are absolutely unacceptable in a civilized society.
“Doctors are the lifeline of our society and dedicate their entire lives to treat us when we need them. Violence against doctors is neither civilized behavior nor is it desirable,” a media statement issued by the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata on Wednesday afternoon quoted the governor as saying.
Also, the Governor had urged everyone to be aware of the role of doctors in ensuring treatment and care of those in need.
The main accused in the assault of a female junior doctor attached to Uluberia Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay Government Medical College and Hospital in Uluberia in Howrah district on Monday afternoon was Sheikh Babulal, a traffic home guard posted at Uluberia traffic guard in Howrah district, and was also known as a strong leader of the local Trinamool Congress.
He is currently in police custody and has also been relieved from the duty of traffic home guard.
Let us remind you that when the female junior doctor was attacked on Monday evening, she was working in the maternity ward. After examining the traffic home guard’s relative, she went to the hospital toilet and was sitting there, when Babulal along with other people attacked her.
The junior doctor alleged that one of the attackers twisted his hand while the other allegedly slapped his neck. It is alleged that some people in the group, allegedly Babulal, even threatened to rape her and kill her. Later the ward nurse and other staff saved him from the attackers.
The junior doctor lodged a written complaint at Uluberia police station on Monday night. Based on his complaint, the police have started investigating the incident. After initial investigation, three people including Babulal were arrested on Tuesday morning.
