Kolkata, Oct 9 (IANS) In his first reaction on the deadly attack, West Bengal BJP MP Khagen Murmu on Thursday said the attackers had indeed planned to kill him and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh during their visit to the flood-affected area in Nagarakata in Jalpaiguri district.
The BJP MP, currently admitted in a private hospital in Siliguri, North Bengal, said that if he had not escaped from there, he would not have survived.
“The plan was to kill us together. They even tried to pull us out of the car. They could not do it. If they had pulled us out, they would have crushed our heads with stones and killed us,” the BJP MP said.
On Monday, when Khagen Murmu and Shankar Ghosh went to Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri district to provide relief in the flood affected area, they faced opposition.
A large number of people attacked BJP leaders with sticks and shoes. Stones were picked up from the river and thrown at his car.
Khagen Murmu suffered serious facial injuries and both the politicians were later admitted to hospital for treatment.
Although Shankar Ghoh was released on Wednesday, Khagen Murmu is still undergoing treatment as he will undergo surgery and is likely to have a metal plate implanted in his left cheekbone.
Meanwhile, responding to Murmu’s allegations, senior Trinamool leader and North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha said that to say that there was a conspiracy to kill him or that he could have been killed is actually a big claim.
Guha said, “If someone wanted to kill him, why would only his cheek be hit? He is reading the script prepared for him by his party.”
He told that Trinamool has already condemned the attack and his party has said that this incident is not right.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have also condemned the attack on BJP leaders.
BJP has filed a complaint against eight people at Nagarakata police station in Jalpaiguri district. Based on the complaint, the police have arrested four people in connection with the incident.
However, after the incident, Trinamool Congress issued a statement saying that their workers were not involved in the Nagarakata incident. He also condemned the attack. A day after the incident, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Murmu in the hospital.
