Kolkata: Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials on Wednesday finally arrested another key accused in the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, almost two years after the incident.
The person arrested in this connection has been identified as Durant Mollah, a close aide of now suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan, who was once considered the uncrowned king of Sandeshkhali.
The main charge against Mollah is that he led the team of Shahjahan’s associates who attacked ED officials, in which three investigating officers were seriously injured.
Even the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel accompanying the ED officer faced the wrath of the mob, who also vandalized several vehicles of the investigation team.
Initially the West Bengal Police investigated the case. Later, as the CBI took over the investigation, Mollah was identified as leading the team of attackers.
Although Shahjahan was arrested by West Bengal Police about a month after the attack on ED officials, Mollah went into hiding and remained missing for almost two years.
Finally, in the early hours of Wednesday, he was arrested by CBI officials from a hideout in North 24 Parganas district.
However, CBI officials are yet to reveal the exact location from where he was nabbed.
Mollah will be produced in the court today and CBI lawyers will seek his custody.
Shahjahan, the main accused in the multi-crore ration distribution case in West Bengal, faces several other charges against him, including forcibly occupying land in Sandeshkhali, illegally converting farmland into fish farms by forcefully pumping salt water into that land and sexually exploiting local women in Sandeshkhali.
