Bengaluru, October 8 (IANS) Karnataka Police on Wednesday filed an FIR against lawyer Rakesh Kishore for trying to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai in the Supreme Court. An FIR has been registered in this regard after the complaint of Bhaktavachala, President of All India Advocates Association.
Vidhana Soudha police in Bengaluru have registered a zero FIR against 71-year-old Rakesh Kishore under sections 132, 133 of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) on charges of assault or battery to deter a public servant from discharging his duties and using criminal force with intent to insult any person.
Zero FIR is an FIR that can be lodged at any police station, irrespective of where the crime took place or the jurisdiction of the police station. Police sources said the case will be transferred to the jurisdictional police in New Delhi.
The FIR states, on October 6, lawyer Rakesh Kishore committed the offense by throwing a shoe towards the dais in Court Hall No. 1 of the Supreme Court of India, New Delhi.
Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran were present in the courtroom at that time. The complainant has requested that a case be registered against the accused to protect the dignity and integrity of the judiciary.
Lawyers held a silent protest in front of the state High Court, condemning the attack on Supreme Court Chief Justice BR Gavai. He demanded the immediate arrest of the lawyer Rakesh Kishore who attacked. The protesters said this was a major insult aimed at undermining the independence of the judiciary and stressed that there should be a thorough investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding a judicial inquiry and immediate action on the blatant casteist attack against the Honorable Chief Justice of India in the name of ‘Sanatan’.
Reacting to the incident of a lawyer throwing a shoe at the Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his disagreement saying that it is a highly condemnable act and throwing shoes at judges in the name of religion is not acceptable.
