Atishi orders inquiry against 12 DU colleges for misuse of government funds

Delhi Higher Education Minister Atishi on Saturday directed the Secretary (Higher Education) to investigate alleged irregularities in 12 government-funded Delhi University colleges, officials said.

Atishi said there had been “major procedural irregularities” and the colleges had appointed 1,897 employees – 939 teaching and 958 non-teaching posts – without the approval of the Delhi government.

“Major procedural irregularities have emerged. The colleges appointed 1,897 employees – 939 teaching and 958 non-teaching posts – without the approval of the Delhi government, which is in clear violation of established government procedures and rules,” he said.

The Minister directed the Secretary to identify the principals and officers responsible for creating the illegal posts and take strict action against them, including recovery of salaries since 2015 of the illegally appointed staff members.

“These colleges are funded from the government exchequer and hence, they should be held accountable for any misuse of funds,” he said. Atishi said the lapses included spending hundreds of crores of rupees from the government treasury.

“Contracts worth crores of rupees for safety and sanitation works were executed without following normal financial and accounting norms and in violation of the “pattern of assistance” approved by the Delhi government,” he said.
