The scheme was launched to celebrate the 101st birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Union Minister Manohar Lal inaugurated Atal Canteen in Nehru Nagar, Lajpat Nagar. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta,
and Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood.
TOI quoted Manohar Lal as saying, “This scheme is not just a welfare programme, but a commitment to provide dignified assistance to citizens. By offering a nutritious meal for ₹5, we are ensuring that no one goes hungry in Delhi.”
CM Gupta said, “There will be a total of 100 Atal canteens in Delhi. 45 were inaugurated today, and the remaining 55 will be operational within 15-20 days. A nominal fee of ₹5 has been fixed to maintain the dignity of beneficiaries and prevent wastage of food.”
Each Atal Canteen is expected to provide around 1,000 meals a day with a budget of ₹104.24 crore, ensuring that over one lakh people in Delhi get affordable, nutritious food on a daily basis.
The Delhi government has selected 11 agencies to operate the canteens, which have modern kitchens, LPG-powered cooking systems, industrial RO water plants, digital token systems, CCTV surveillance and regular audits. FSSAI and NABL-accredited laboratories will continuously test food quality and raw materials.
According to a News18 report, lunch at the Atal canteen will be served between 11 am and 4 pm, followed by dinner between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm.
For just ₹5, these canteens will serve a meal of beans (dal), rice, chapatti, a seasonal vegetable and a pickle. Each 600 gram thali contains 700-800 calories and 20-25 grams of protein to ensure a nutritionally balanced meal.
Delhi government has replaced manual coupons with digital token system for food distribution. CCTV cameras will monitor all the centers in real time using the digital platform of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB).
