Gogoi, who was the Chief Justice of India in 2018-19, had led the bench that delivered the verdict in the decades-old Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title case.

Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, the first person from the northeastern region to hold the post, was on Tuesday nominated for Assam’s highest civilian award ‘Assam Bhaibav’.

This announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at a press conference here, during which he also revealed the names of prominent personalities who will receive two other major awards of the state government.

This year, we have decided to honor former CJI Ranjan Gogoi with the ‘Assam Bhaibav’ Award for his achievements in the judicial field. He is an inspiration for the coming generations,” Sarma said.

Gogoi, who was the Chief Justice of India in 2018-19, had led the bench that delivered the verdict in the decades-old Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title case.

He is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha, he was nominated in March 2020.

The ‘Assam Bhaibav’ award carries a financial component of Rs 5 lakh.

Sarma announced the names of four prominent individuals for the ‘Assam Saurav’ awards, including swimmer Elvis Ali Hazarika and sprinter Hima Das.

Cultural heritage management expert Kishan Chand Nauriyal and Tiwa dance exponent Nandiram Deuri are the other two award winners in this section.

A total of 17 people have been nominated for ‘Assam Pride’, including human-elephant conflict expert Parbati Barua, sound engineer Debjit Changmai, organic farmer Neelam Dutta, mushroom spawn cultivator Basant Chiring Phukan, ASHA worker Meenakshi Chetia, elephant -Contains friendly tea gardens. Owner Tenzing Bodoa and Anganwadi worker Nari Hassa.

Sarma said the awards are meant to recognize the contributions of people who can become icons and inspirations for others.

The awards will be presented by Governor Gulab Chand Kataria at a ceremony on February 10, which will also be attended by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The financial component of ‘Assam Saurav’ is Rs 4 lakh and that of ‘Assam Gaurav’ is Rs 3 lakh.

In addition, the privileges of the awards include free medical treatment in Government hospitals and accommodation in paid cabins wherever available, accommodation in State Government Circuit House, Guest House and Assam Bhawan and two allowances towards medical expenses for the treatment of serious illnesses. Lakhs of rupees are involved.
