Imphal, Oct 21 (IANS) Assam Rifles on Tuesday paid rich tributes to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the service of the nation in a series of touching commemorative programs in four districts of Manipur. The officers provided this information.
A defense spokesperson said that from solemn remembrances to symbolic gestures of unity, tributes spread across Tengnoupal, Kakching, Thoubal and Chandel districts, reflecting the enduring legacy of courage and sacrifice.
A touching wreath-laying ceremony was held on Tuesday at the Assam Rifles battalion headquarters in Tengnoupal district to honor 16 brave soldiers who made supreme sacrifice during the 1962 India-China war in the North-East Frontier Agency of present-day Arunachal Pradesh, he said.
The ceremony is a reminder of the indomitable spirit with which Indian soldiers faced one of the toughest military challenges in the country’s history.
Facing difficult terrain and adverse weather, these heroes upheld the highest ideals of duty and patriotism.
A total of 138 personnel of Assam Rifles participated in the ceremony, provided Guard of Honor and paid homage to the martyred soldiers with deep respect.
The gathering reflected on the bravery and selflessness of the martyrs, whose legacy continues to inspire generations of soldiers.
A similar flower laying ceremony was held on Monday at another place in Tengnoupal district bordering Myanmar.
In a parallel gesture of remembrance, Assam Rifles observed “a diya in the names of martyrs” in Kakching, Thoubal and Chandel districts of Manipur, including all forward companies along the India-Myanmar border, the defense spokesperson said.
On the auspicious occasion of Diwali, the festival of lights, thousands of lamps were lit by soldiers, officers and their families in memory of the bravehearts who laid down their lives in defense of the nation.
The flickering flames placed on war memorials and company posts created a powerful visual tribute that resonated with solemnity and pride.
Local villagers participated in the ritual in large numbers, standing shoulder to shoulder with the soldiers in a shared moment of silence and gratitude.
The initiative not only honored the martyrs but also deepened the emotional bond between the security forces and the communities they protect.
Together, these commemorations reflect Assam Rifles’ unwavering commitment to remember and honor its fallen heroes.
Be it a formal tribute or a symbolic lighting, the force retains the spirit of sacrifice that defines its legacy as the ‘sentinel of the North East’, the officer said.
