Guwahati, Nov 3 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of popular singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has been directed to file its charge sheet by December 8, extending the previous deadline by nine days.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, CM Sarma said that the investigation is in its final stages and all necessary measures are being taken to ensure timely submission of the report.
The Chief Minister said, “The charge sheet in Zubeen’s case was earlier finalized on December 17, but I have directed the SIT to complete it by December 8. We are fully prepared from all sides.”
Chief Minister Sarma said procedural requirements had slowed down the process as the incident took place outside India, requiring prior approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) before filing the charge sheet.
“Since the case involves incidents taking place on foreign soil, MHA approval is mandatory. I met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi yesterday to expedite the approval,” he said.
He said the SIT will formally approach the MHA in the next three to four days and the charge sheet is expected to be filed between December 7 and 10.
The Chief Minister’s announcement comes amid growing public outrage and emotional appeals across Assam demanding justice for the late singer, who held an iconic position in the state’s music and film industry.
Zubeen Garg’s untimely death has sparked widespread grief and speculation, with fans and opposition leaders alike demanding transparency and accountability in the investigation.
The SIT formed by the Assam government has been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, which officials have described as a matter of “deep public sentiment”.
CM Sarma reiterated his government’s commitment to ensure a thorough, fair and impartial investigation and assured that no stone will be left unturned in uncovering the truth behind the incident.
