Ashok Gehlot wants immediate release of Sonam Wangchuk

Jaipur, October 3 (IANS) Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday demanded immediate release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been in custody in Jodhpur Jail.

Wangchuk, a prominent activist from Ladakh, has been widely awarded for his work in education, environmental protection and other social causes. Addressing the media, Gehlot expressed surprise at the rapid development, which led to the arrest of Wangchuk.

He said, “Sonam Wangchuk is a prominent worker who is working on education, environment and many other subjects, and is held in the highest relationship in Leh and Ladakh.”

Gehlot also highlighted Wangchuk’s previous support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, given that he had constantly talked to the PM.

“He was a supporter of Modi. Whenever he used to go anywhere, he praised him and spoke highly. What happened suddenly that he was accused in such a way that he should be sent to Jodhpur Jail? It is beyond comprehension,” Gehlot said.

Commenting on Wangchuk’s wife, Gehlot said, “She is very intelligent. She is writing a letter and the media is getting engaged in thinking in conversations. The government should take her concerns seriously.”

He emphasized that Wangchuk’s contribution to society and his clean public records made it difficult to understand his continuous detention. “I believe they should be released immediately,” Gehlot said, urged the authorities to consider Wangchuk’s social service decades and his reputation as a respected worker in Ladakh.

It is necessary to mention here that Sonam Wangchuk’s wife Geetanjali J. Angmo has contacted the Supreme Court, demanding the release of the climate activist, which was detained last week under the Strust National Security Act (NSA) in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

Wangchuk has been a vocal lawyer for education reforms and sustainable development in Ladakh. Over the years, he has gained national and international recognition for his efforts to create low -cost school models, promote environmental protection and encourage scientific innovation among students.
