Guwahati:
Opposition Congress and AIUDF staged a walkout from the Assam Assembly on Monday in protest against the state cabinet’s decision to repeal the Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act, 1935.
AIUDF had moved an adjournment motion to discuss the cabinet decision, which was rejected by Speaker Biswajit Daimary.
Congress said that amendments could be made in the original bill without completely repealing it.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Assam Cabinet on Friday approved the decision to repeal the Act to eliminate the social menace of child marriage in the state.
Responding to criticism from opposition parties, Mr Sarma said in the House on Monday that the bill would be repealed as it is a step towards ending child marriage.
“As long as I am alive, I will not allow child marriage to happen in Assam,” he said.
Congress walked out of the House for 10 minutes against the cabinet decision.
The AIUDF MLAs initially raised slogans and came into the well of the House and sat on the floor for more than five minutes.
Later they also walked out as the Speaker continued the listed business of the House.
However, the opposition CPI(M) MLA and the lone independent MLA remained present in the House.
