After investigating the case for years, Mumbai Police arrested Sheena’s mother Indrani Mukherjee, a former media executive, and her second husband Peter Mukherjee, along with their driver Shyamvar Rai in August 2015. Blame? Kidnapping, murder and gruesome disposal of Sheena Bora’s body.
The arrest followed months-long surveillance of Indrani following a tip-off and Rai’s earlier arrest on charges of illegal weapons possession.

During interrogation, Khanna and Rai confessed to the crime. However, Indrani vehemently denied the allegations and claimed that Sheena was alive and well, living in the United States.
The interrogation of Shyam Rai allegedly revealed details of Sheena’s murder, in which Indrani and her ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna were involved.
According to Rai’s account, the murder was carefully planned, with Indrani surveying the location to dispose of the body a day before the crime. Khanna allegedly strangled Sheena in a Bandra street after she was dropped off by Rahul Mukherjee on the evening of April 24, 2012. Investigators claim that the body was then taken to Indrani’s residence in Worli, where it was hidden in a bag and kept in the trunk of the car.
Rai claimed that the trio embarked on a horrific journey to Gagode village in Maharashtra to dispose of the dead body.
what was the purpose
During the trial, many dark secrets of the Mukherjee family came to light. Sheena Bora was reportedly in a live-in relationship with her stepbrother Rahul, Peter Mukherjee’s younger son from his first wife. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) claimed that financial disputes and Indrani’s opposition to Sheena’s relationship with Rahul were the main reasons behind the murder. The alleged conspiracy, which also involved Peter Mukherjee, painted a picture of a complex family dynamics marred by jealousy and conflict.
While lodged in Byculla jail for the murder of her daughter, Indrani Mukherjee came out with a memoir titled ‘Unbroken: The Untold Story’, in which she said that Sheena Bora was not a daughter but like a sister to her.
In a city where dreams and nightmares collide, the Sheena Bora murder case remains a horror story, a dark chapter in the records of crime history.
The docu-series, titled ‘The Indrani Mukherjee Story: The Buried Truth’, tells the story of Sheena Bora’s disappearance and is scheduled to premiere on streaming platform Netflix on February 29.
