Itanagar, Nov 1 (IANS) Ahead of Kepang La Day on November 17, the Spear Corps of the Indian Army organized the Siang Open Mini Marathon in the picturesque vibrant village of Tuting in Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh to honor the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of Kepang La in 1962.
Defense spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said the event themed “Siang Mini Marathon” to commemorate “Kepang La Day” was attended by over 517 participants from the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and local population including school children, women and youth. The participants ran in two categories – 2 km and 7 km – through the breathtaking landscape of the Siang Valley, displaying enthusiasm, fitness and patriotic fervor.
The spokesperson said that the Mini Marathon is more than a sporting event; It is a symbol of unity, remembrance and civil-military harmony.
Tooting, located on India’s easternmost border, is a living testament to national resilience and community spirit.
Lt Col Rawat said that through this initiative, the Indian Army reaffirms its commitment to promote friendship, fitness and togetherness among the border communities while honoring the bravehearts of the 1962 war.
The event concluded with a felicitation ceremony, where winners of various categories were awarded medals, certificates and cash prizes.
The enthusiasm and participation of local youth and women was particularly appreciated, reflecting the growing culture of sports and fitness in the border areas.
The local people appreciated the event and appreciated the energy and determination of the participants. He highlighted that the Siang Mini Marathon is not just a tribute but also a remembrance of the indomitable courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who fought to protect the honor of the country at Kepang La.
The Defense spokesperson said that under ‘Operation Sadbhavana’, the Indian Army continues to take several initiatives to promote education, health care and sports in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Siang Mini Marathon is another testament to the Army’s enduring commitment to nation building and promoting harmony among the people of the frontier.
The event ended on a patriotic note with slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Jai Hind” as the participants and spectators alike instilled a new sense of pride, unity and gratitude towards the heroes whose valor inspires the spirit of a strong and united nation.
