an art teacher He was banned from the classroom after telling GSCE students how to improve their work during exams and allowing them to take the work home.
Wendy Lewis, 59, also told pupils at St Dunstan’s School Glastonbury Due to “strike day” and “bank holiday“That’s not true.
A food technology and arts teacher since 2001, she resigned in August 2023 following an internal disciplinary investigation.
A panel hearing by the teaching watchdog heard Ms Lewis breached strict exam rules which stipulate that students are not allowed to add to or revise work completed within 10 hours of supervision.
However, on April 26 and 27, 2023, she made suggestions to students, including telling one student to add a black background and suggesting another student mute the colors in her work.
She was also caught making drawings for multiple students, allowing them to ask her questions and saying she could come and help them.
At the end of the assessment she said: “If you have any unfinished business that needs to be completed…I’m leaving the room, I think you know what I mean”. This allows students to take unfinished assessments home and complete them outside of exam times.
The investigation concluded that she had acted with a lack of integrity and dishonesty and that her conduct had brought the teaching profession into disrepute.
It was noted: “The panel considers that it is clear that providing advice and assistance, providing unauthorized extensions, asking students to complete work beyond the time allowed and providing false reasons for doing so clearly falls short of the higher standards expected of teachers.”
Ms Lewis fully admitted this and expressed remorse for her actions, with the panel noting that she had an otherwise good record and was considered a “respected and high-performing teacher”.
However, her actions were ruled to be “willful” and she failed to meet her responsibilities.
As a result, she was banned indefinitely from teaching in any school, university or children’s home. She can apply to have the ban lifted in December 2027.
