The most challenging runs are at Polar Peak and Curry Bowl, with tree skiing at Siberia or Timber Bowl. The trails around Timber Bowl Express are more open and longer with 650 meters of vertical.
When choosing accommodation, be aware that the resort village of Fernie, while convenient, is quite small and quiet. The town of Fernie itself is much more lively and has good bus links to the resort five miles away.
big white
Big White is one of the best options in the country for beginners, intermediates and those looking to learn to ski powder, with less steep terrain and plenty of shelter and trees. Located in the Okanagan Highlands, this 2,800-acre resort was purpose-built for ski-in/ski-out access, providing easy access to the slopes from most accommodations.
About 18 percent of its 119 runs are designated as beginners, while intermediates have a choice of slopes, with more than 50 percent catering for them. Although the resort is less advanced-friendly, there are challenging open areas at the top of the mountain.
Marketed as ‘Canada’s Favorite Family Resort’, Big White is also a great spot for a ski vacation with kids. The ‘Happy Valley’ area at the bottom of the village offers many non-skiing activities, and there are enough good restaurants to complement your stay if necessary.

Lewis Lake
Lake Louise is located a little further from Banff than Sunshine Village, but offers a larger ski area and some of the most amazing views in Banff National Park, including the famous Mount Assiniboine. The area around the base of the hill would be a good start for beginners, while the area around the Grizzly Express and Larch Express lifts include good beginner runs and some top-to-bottom greenery. Rest bowls are suitable for most intermediates, while back bowls are good for more advanced people.
Most people will choose to live in Banff, although the 45-minute drive to Lake Louise may be a problem for some. A lift pass for the ‘Ski Big 3’ area covers Lake Louise, Sunshine Village and nearby Mount Norquay, but a stay at Lake Louise is a great option for a relaxing week split between skiing, the odd trip to Banff and all that this charming village has to offer.
revelstoke
Revelstoke has managed to garner a glowing reputation despite being in existence for a much shorter time than most of its competitors (it opened in 2007). Another resort renowned for its snow quality and quantity, it is still a work in progress – you can currently explore about 3,000 acres of the intended 8,000 acres – but it is already a highly regarded destination for those at intermediate levels or above.
Mount Mackenzie has everything from well-groomed, long blues like the 4km Snow Rodeo to steep open ground or tree skiing around the North and South Bowls, whose 1,700-metre vertical drop is the tallest on the continent. Heli-skiing is also popular in Revelstoke, opening up access to 500,000 acres and 400 runs.
