A youth leader on Wednesday flagged off a 1,000-km walk to create public awareness on the Aravalli mountain range and its ecological importance.

The Save Aravalli movement began with leader Nirmal Chaudhary offering prayers at the Arbuda Devi temple in Mount Abu, the highest city in the Aravalli range.

Addressing a gathering, he said that Aravalli is not just a mountain range but the backbone of Rajasthan’s environment, water security and life system.

“If Aravali is destroyed, the state will face a serious environmental crisis,” he said.

After the procession in Mount Abu, the foot march moved towards Abu Road, in which a large number of people participated.

Former Sirohi MLA Sanyam Lodha said the threat to the Aravalis has reached every household and warned that continued degradation could accelerate desertification.

He said Abu Road Sant Mandal had also passed a resolution protesting the recent developments related to Aravalli and expressed displeasure over the Supreme Court’s decision on the issue.

District Congress president Leela Ram Garasia described Aravali as “life-giving” and said continued public pressure would force the government to reconsider its decisions.

Another youth leader Nirmal Gehlot alleged that the Environment Minister and his department have misled the Supreme Court by submitting wrong documents.

He claimed that the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has not supported the current decision affecting Aravali.

Meanwhile, many saints of Abu Road Sant Mandal supported the foot march.

Sant Niranjan Giri Maharaj said that Aravali is a lifeline and their safety is the responsibility of every citizen.
