Araria is one of the 243 constituencies of Bihar Legislative Assembly. There are a total of six assembly constituencies in the district. Araria constituency, established in 1951, has seen 18 assembly elections, including one by-election in 2009. This is a general class seat.

Abidur Rahman of Congress is the current MLA from here. In the 2025 assembly elections, Araria seat went to polls on November 11 as part of the second phase of voting in the state.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Chandra Bhushan, the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) has fielded Shagufta Azim, and the Indian National Congress (INC) has nominated Abidur Rahman.

What happened in the 2020 assembly elections?

In the multi-cornered election in 2020, Abidur Rehman of Congress won the seat by 47,936 votes. She secured 103,054 votes (54.84%) against JD(U)’s Shagufta Azim, who received 55,118 votes (29.33%). AIMIM and LJP candidates were left far behind.

In 2020, 187908 people voted, which is 58.91% of the total voters in the constituency. With 179,509 votes, 56.30% of the voters were Muslims.

In 2015, Avidur Rehman (Congress) defeated Ajay Kumar Jha (LJP) by a margin of 40,044 votes.
