Chennai, Oct 28 (IANS) Actor-politician and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the DMK government over the way it handled paddy procurement in the state and flood damage in the Cauvery delta region, and accused Chief Minister MK Stalin’s administration of betraying farmers and showing indifference towards their livelihood.
In a strongly worded statement, Vijay said the incessant rains that have been drenching the delta have not only destroyed the paddy crop but also exposed the incompetence and negligence of the ruling government.
He declared, “Just as wet grain has sprouted, the growing public resistance against DMK’s anti-people rule will also sprout, grow and flourish – sending this government home.”
Vijay questioned why the state government had failed to take swift action to save the remaining paddy stocks from the incessant rains.
He said, “A government that really cares about farmers would take steps to protect their livelihoods and help them achieve financial stability. Instead, this government is crushing poor farmers by delaying procurement and letting their hard-earned produce rot in the rain.”
Noting that poor farmers are completely dependent on agriculture for survival, Vijay said they deserve a fair system that ensures timely procurement and fair prices.
“Every year we see the same distressing situation repeating itself. Is the Stalin government deliberately preventing farmers from earning money by selling their produce?” he asked.
The TVK leader criticized DMK’s claims of advocating the interests of the delta region, calling it mere political posturing.
“Stalin claims to be native to the delta, but year after year, farmers’ crops are ruined by monsoon rains while the government sits idly by. Shouldn’t measures be taken to prevent such losses? Shouldn’t storage facilities be improved to protect the harvested paddy?” he asked.
Making a symbolic comparison, Vijay said that just as neglected grains have sprouted inside storage bags, resentment against the DMK has started growing in the minds of people.
“This discontent will soon strengthen and drive the anti-people rulers back home,” he claimed.
He urged the government to immediately stop all activities detrimental to the livelihood of farmers and take steps on war footing to protect crops and people during the ongoing Northeast Monsoon season.
