Chennai, November 6 (IANS) Sharply criticizing the Centre’s recent move, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President K. Selvaperunthagai said the BJP-led central government’s decision to close down the registered postal service of the Indian Postal Department and force citizens to rely only on Speed Post is an “anti-people policy that exploits the poor and undermines social justice”.

“It is one of the few departments that provides direct service to the public and has earned a profit of over Rs 2,300 crore in the last financial year,” he wrote.
“However, with the sole aim of increasing revenue, the central BJP government has now abolished the registered postal service and is forcing people to use expensive speed post. This decision has forced the poor, students, job seekers, lawyers and government departments to pay almost double the fees than before for sending letters, applications and certificates.”
Selvaperunthagai pointed out that although there is no significant difference in delivery time between registered post and speed post, the charges vary significantly. “The price of registered post was earlier around Rs 45, while the price of speed post is Rs 85. The acknowledgment card fee has also been increased from Rs 3 to Rs 11. To make matters worse, an additional 18 per cent GST has been imposed on these services,” he said.
He described the decision as a direct attack on India’s communication rights and said it would harm literacy promotion, educational institutions and small businesses that depend on cheap postal services.
The TNCC chief said, “The postal service is a basic medium of communication for the common people. Stopping the registered postal service is not just a financial burden – it is economic exploitation of India’s poor.”
Selvaperunthagai urged the Central Government and the Department of Posts to immediately withdraw the decision, restore registered postal service and reduce speed post charges. He concluded, “On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee, I strongly condemn this unjust decision that targets the poor and the working classes.”
