Anthony Joshua ‘in stable condition’ after crash in Nigeria that killed two team members

British boxer Anthony Joshua is recovering in hospital after a car crash in Nigeria that killed two team members.

The incident occurred along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday morning, with unconfirmed video online showing Joshua sitting shirtless in a car surrounded by broken glass, looking dazed and lost.

The 36-year-old is on holiday in Nigeria after his victory over his rivals. Jake Paul On December 19, he was receiving treatment for his injuries and was currently in “stable condition.”

Joshua’s spokesman confirmed the victims were Sina Gami and Latif Ayodele, both long-term friends of the former two-time unified world heavyweight champion and who held roles within his team.

Gami serves as the strength and conditioning coach and Ayodele serves as the coach.

Just hours before the accident, both Joshua and Ayodele posted videos on their websites Instagram Their record of playing table tennis.

“It is with our deepest sadness that we confirm the passing of Sina Gami and Latif Ayodele following a road traffic accident in Lagos, Nigeria earlier today. Both were close friends and integral members of Anthony’s team,” the spokesperson said.

“We respectfully ask that these families be provided space and privacy at this time to process this truly shocking and devastating news.

“Anthony was injured in the accident and was sent to the hospital for examination and treatment. He is currently in stable condition and will remain in the hospital for observation.”

The Press Association understands the driver of the Lexus Jeep, who also survived the crash, was hired locally and was not a friend or family member.

A joint statement earlier issued by the Ogun and Lagos state governments said Joshua and another man had been taken to hospital.

The Ogun State government added that Joshua “narrowly escaped death”.

“Anthony Joshua and the other passenger were immediately evacuated to a specialized medical facility in Lagos,” the statement read.

“After comprehensive clinical assessment, doctors determined that both patients are in stable condition and do not require any urgent medical intervention at this time.

“A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely. Anthony Joshua is conscious and has been in contact with his family.

“An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident has also begun.”

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) posted several photos of the crash scene on X, revealing preliminary findings indicating that a Lexus Jeep was “suspected of speeding”.

The FRSC added that the vehicle lost control during an “overtaking maneuver” and hit a stationary truck on the side of the road.

Joshua beat YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul on his return from a 15-month break from boxing in the lucrative showdown in Miami earlier this month, a sixth-round fight televised by streaming giant Netflix.

Joshua was born in Watford to Nigerian parents and spent his early school years in the African country before returning to the UK at the age of 12.
