But there was no debate about legality in the sixth round, as Joshua scored the fourth and final knockdown, leaving an exhausted Paul on his knees in the corner of the ring.
Paul, 28, had beaten the referee’s count on three previous occasions, but could not do so this time, as he was counted out and defeated for the second time in his professional career. Meanwhile, Joshua bounced back from his stoppage loss to Daniel Dubois with a win at the Kasia Center in 2024.
Still, it took some time for the 36-year-old to land a knockdown or any meaningful attack. Paul spent most of the initial period avoiding the Briton in a larger ring than usual“AJ” is struggling to crush the American.
As the fight progressed, boos began to rain down, with Paul repeatedly diving at Joshua’s legs, perhaps to avoid damage and buy time. Yet when Joshua trapped Paul in the ropes, he often caught him with right hands, and failed to locate the shorter, wiry man’s head.
Paul also taunted Joshua by sticking his tongue out at the former world champion and the YouTuber also created notable moments by occasionally throwing jabs and hooks at AJ.
Before the fight, the fourth round was described by many fans and pundits as crucial; If Joshua couldn’t stop Paul before the end of that frame, he would have failed, many said. At this point, data showed how low each person had thrown and how low they had landed.
Paul was warned by the referee for repeatedly attempting to grab Joshua’s leg, as the American tried to pull Joshua down with him more than once. At one point, Paul alleged he had suffered a mild concussion and was given time to recover, with the 28-year-old taking about a minute – in fact Joshua’s knee struck him in the groin as he staggered to the canvas.

“The fans didn’t pay to see this crap,” the referee warned both fighters, but fans soon got what they got. Did Pay to watch.
An uppercut hurt Paul in the fifth round, as Joshua landed his best shot of the fight, causing the YouTuber to fall to his knees again to buy time. Still no knockdown was scored, but in the coming moments, Paul was clearly tired and less mobile than before. Joshua punished him with body shots, and Paul appeared to twist his leg while retreating.
Joshua hurt Paul again and was eventually awarded a knockdown, before scoring a second by hitting a right cross to the chin of Paul, who missed the bell.
Joshua floored a cornered Paul with a piston right cross in the sixth frame and Paul, to his credit, managed to keep fighting. He even taunted Joshua again, sticking his tongue out at AJ, who continued to stalk the imposing man before thrashing him in the corner for the fourth knockdown.
This time, Paul was unable to get up in time, ending the controversial fight and fans cheering.
“I appreciate everyone in this venue,” Joshua said after the fight. “It wasn’t the best performance. The ultimate goal was to catch him, pin him down and hurt him. That’s what people wanted, that’s what I had in mind. It took longer than expected.
“Now, Jake Paul played really well tonight. He gets up again and again. It was tough for me out there. We give him our respect, he tried and tried, but he came up there against a real fighter.
“I saw Eddie [Hearn, promoter] Saying: ‘Get him now!’ I said I would take his soul, watch it come out of his body again and again. I said it, and it happened. I understand the psychology of fighting.
Joshua also addressed critics of his decision to take the fight, saying: “I don’t care about the legacy, it lasts about 50 years, then it’s done. That’s what I’ve decided to do. I’m going to keep doing it until I can’t die anymore. We can just do our best.”
He also addressed compatriot Tyson Furywith whom he has been linked for a long time, saying: “If Tyson is as serious as he says he is, if he wants to put on some gloves, accept a challenge… don’t talk like ‘AJ this, AJ that.’ Let’s see you talk with your fists.
Paul added: “That was crazy, I had a lot of fun, I’m blessed by God to put in a performance like that. Anthony is a great fighter, I got my ass kicked. But I’ll come back and keep winning.
“I have already won in every way in life, my family, my beautiful fiancée… by the way my jaw is brokenIt’s definitely smashed, a nice little ass-performance from one of the best ever.”
Paul, who spat blood during his in-ring interview, added: “Honestly, I’m not surprised; I was just tired, handling his weight. I think with better cardio, I could have continued to fight. I did my personal best. Sure, we’ll fix the broken jaw, go back, fight guys at my weight and go for the cruiserweight world title.”
Friday’s fight came 13 months after Paul defeated heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson, 58, and six months after he defeated former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on points.
Before this, Paul had only been defeated by Tyson’s half-brother Tommy Fury, who defeated the YouTuber via decision in 2023.
