Andy Murray out for ‘extended period’ with ankle injury

Andy Murray faces an “extended” off-season after suffering a serious ankle injury at the Miami Open.

The two-time former Wimbledon champion suffered an ankle injury during a marathon match with Tomas Machak of the Czech Republic at the Miami Open, ultimately losing the match.

He managed to complete the third round but said he will visit an ankle specialist when he returns to the UK this week.

“Towards the end of yesterday’s game in Miami, I suffered a complete rupture of my ATFL (anterior talofibular ligament) and a near full-thickness rupture of my CFL (calcaneofibular ligament),” Murray said on Instagram.

“When I get home I’m going to see an ankle specialist to figure out the next steps.

“Needless to say, it’s been a difficult process and I will be out for a long time. But when the time comes, I will return with hip and ankle ligaments.”

Murray suffered an injury and fell to the ground when he lost 5-7 7-5 7-6 (5) in the 10th game of the final.

The 36-year-old, who expects this to be his last year on tour, said he doesn’t expect to play much longer after the summer.
