Vijayawada, October 13 (IANS) The ACB special court has arrested senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer N. Sanjay’s bail plea was rejected on Monday.
After the court again rejected the bail plea, Sanjay will have to remain in Vijayawada district jail.
Sanjay, a 1996 batch IPS officer, served as the Director General (DG) of AP State Disaster Response and Fire Services and Additional Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
They are accused of manipulating the tender processes to award the contract for development and maintenance of AGNI – NOC (Governance and NOC Integration) web portal and mobile app and supplying the hardware to a private company in violation of the procedures in 2023.
There are allegations that the IPS officer ordered the purchase of some equipment without calling for tender. The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is also probing allegations of irregularities in payments to private companies and execution of projects.
Last month, ACB had interrogated Sajay for three days. He was questioned over allegations of financial irregularities, misuse of funds and procedural violations during his tenure in various branches of the police department.
Following the instructions of the Supreme Court, Sanjay surrendered in the ACB court on 26 August.
On July 31, the Supreme Court rejected the anticipatory bail granted to Sanjay by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
The High Court had granted conditional anticipatory bail to Sanjay in January 2025, saying that being an IPS officer, there was no question of him absconding.
The state had filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court order. Finding the basis on which anticipatory bail was granted wrong, the Supreme Court had directed Sanjay to surrender within three weeks.
During the previous YSR Congress Party regime, Sanjay, as CID chief, worked closely with then opposition leader and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Had supervised the investigation of the Andhra Pradesh Skill Development Corporation scam against Chandrababu Naidu and the cases related to the alignment of Amaravati Inner Ring Road. These cases resulted in the arrest of Naidu, who spent nearly two months in jail.
After Chandrababu Naidu took over as chief minister in June 2024 following the election victory of the TDP-led NDA, Sanjay was transferred and asked to report to the DGP’s office.
The coalition government also ordered a probe by the Vigilance and Enforcement (V&E) department into the allegations against the IPS officer.
The vigilance report has recommended that the government take appropriate legal action against Sanjay under the Central Service Conduct Rules.
The government suspended Sanjay on December 4 and the ACB registered a case against him for alleged misuse of funds on December 24.
