Amravati, 23 September (IANS) In Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh, fishermen on Tuesday hit the streets to protest the pollution of the sea by industrial units in the coastal area.
Fishermen and their family members blocked the road in UPPADA in U. Kothpally division. While holding the placard and raising slogans, he lodged his protest and demanded the transfer of polluting units.
Tension held up the upper as the protesters blocked the road from both sides, stopping the traffic.
Police and revenue departments did not allow protest, but fishermen proceeded with road blockade. Efforts by the police to calm the protesters and raise the blockade were wasted.
Fishermen alleged that the release of chemicals on the sea shore by pharma companies affects marine life, affecting their livelihood.
He demanded that the officials take action against polluting industrial units in the coastal area.
The fishermen also demanded compensation for every family in the Uppad coastal area.
A large number of fishermen from Upapada and nearby villages participated in the protests. He clarified that the protest would continue to clearly assurance from the authorities.
He said that the authorities should take immediate action to check marine pollution by industries near the coast.
Women were immediately demanding the Government Act to prevent pollution.
The fishermen staged a massive protest on the issue in March last year. The protest became violent when the fishermen of Kmpapapata kept the fishing boats in the fire.
Fishermen from four villages started protests against the pipeline placed by a pharma company in the sea. He alleged that the company is issuing chemicals in the sea, resulting in the death of the fish.
The villagers are complaining of losing income, depending on fishing for a living. Fishermen said that they have presented a representation in the district administration many times, but in vain.
