The new analysis has revealed a sharp increase in the number Girls who are seriously absent From school in the last six academic years.
The data of the Education Department has shown that the number of girls being increased by 257 percent has increased. 50 percent or more missed School session in an academic year since 2017.
2017-2018 In the academic year, 23,936 girls were registered Severely absent In the academic year. By 2023–2024, it increased to 85,549 girls, with an increase of 257 percent.
Charity Agenda Alliance, which analyzed the data, now asked the Education Department to start a specific investigation about the needs of girls missing from education, either through official or informal exclusion.
The agenda Alliance CEO Indy Cross said: “This growth in girls is severely absent from school, but unfortunately the agenda is not surprising for us in the alliance.
“Girls have been telling us about unique challenges they encounter for years, but access to traumatic support they need to feel safe or non-non-existence. To make things worse, girls are often punished for their crisis, face disciplinary action rather than care.
“Therefore it is no wonder that the growing number feels that their only choice is to stay away from school. The government needs to take action on these unacceptable data to ensure that there is a clear strategy that has developed with the support of girls and experts themselves that support them.”
Historically, the low number of girls has been constantly absent from school than boys.
However, data showed that in severe absence this difference has been quite compressed from 21 percent to the same level of girls, there are only 171 more cases in severe absence for boys in 2023-2024.
Agenda Alliance stated that historical interval in gender absence has done limited research for the main reasons that girls are absent from school and means that support systems are designed for boys on a large scale, leaving intervals in provisions for girls’ specific requirements.
It said that its previous research has shown the gender effects of poverty, misconduct and trauma, there is a possibility of issues for girls in school.
Charity said: “These experiences can motivate girls to feel unable to stay in school and feel insecure and therefore do not participate.
A department said for the spokesperson of education, “The government inherited a broken system, children and families faced poor consequences and obstacles for opportunity. The case of dealing with the absence of school’s absence may not be clear: better grade, high wage, the possibility of better life.
“We are already progressing through our plan for changes with more than 3 million days in school this year, but we know that more to do to do so, that is why we have expanded our appearance mentors, rolled out free breakfast clubs, improved mental health assistance and provided additional investment in family support.
“We are also committed to reducing violence against women and girls through earlier intervention, including improving social care of children and updating our new RSHE guidance that will help youth understand healthy relationships and identify unfair behavior.”
