In Jammu and Kashmir, a forest area of at least 1,747 square kilometers is classified into the ‘high risk’ area of forest fire, while 62 square kilometers are classified into a ‘very high risk’ area.
The official documents available with the news agency-Kashmir News Observer (KNO) suggest that “62 square kilometers of forest area of Jammu and Kashmir is located in the area of 62 square kilometers of forest and in an area of 8,972 square kilometers and is located in the forest area respectively under an area of 8,972 square kilometers and an area of 10,606 square kilometers.”
However, documents stated that 62 square kilometers of forest areas have been classified into a ‘very high risk’ area in terms of forest fire, while 33,237 square kilometers of forest areas of Jammu and Kashmir have been classified as ‘no risk’ area.
It states that some areas across India are susceptible to forest fire due to fuel loads, local human activities, topographical facilities, forest types and climatic conditions.
“There is a better and strong system to control and manage wildfire in a region, an effective fire risk zonation helps painting various risk areas to prefer management intervention in an effective way,” reads it.
Documents stated that a pilot study has been done for the Western Himalayan state, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, classing in various risk classes to identify fire risk areas and using suitable variables.
“In Jammu and Kashmir, 79.01 % detection is under 19.74 % of the digitized border sector.” it reads.
The documents of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change further stated that a forest fire has been detected in a period of time, indicating the clarity of the area for the fire of the area. “The map showing forest area in different sections of fire pronunciation can be an effective management tool to control forest fire.
“Such maps can be used to use rare resources available to control wildfire during the fire season. Increased vigilance in the prone areas of excessive fire can effectively prevent forest fire. Given the utility of maping of prone forest areas prone to fire areas, for analyzing 5 km x 5 km x 5 km X 5 km X 5 km x 5 km coverage,”
