“Koby Manu will have opportunities all the time. He played in different positions: he can do that (defensive midfield) position, he can play if we play with three, he can play like we played in the last game – that position. mason mount In this game (a number 10 who drops into midfield).

“So, he’s going to be the future of Manchester United, that’s my feeling. He just needs to wait for his chance and everything can change in two days in football.”

Yet, although Amorim played down the possibility of the youngster leaving on loan in January, with his recent injury making that possibility even less likely, he tempered this by suggesting that he would need to find an adequate replacement.

Midfield is an obvious area that needs strengthening, but the transfer window is right around the corner and the players love it casemiro and centre-back Harry Maguire Out of contract in the summer (although the Brazilian has a 12-month option) there are other things to consider.

“There is no decision,” Amorim said of the pair’s contract status.

“We have a lot to do and we need to understand what is going to happen next season, because we need to understand what we are doing if there are European games.

“We have a lot to do at this moment. We’re not thinking about that. I’m really happy with them but I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

The United boss insisted he would not be disappointed if additional aid did not arrive next month.

“No. Obviously we’re struggling at the moment, but we have a plan across the club,” he said ahead of the trip to Newcastle.

“We will stick to the plan. I think if we have the opportunity to bring in a player who we think will be the future of the club, he will come.

“If not, we have Jack (Fletcher), we have Shea Lacey and in three weeks, we’ll have Amad, Nous (Mazraoui), Brian (Mbeumo). Bruno (Fernandes), Kobi Manu back. So we’ll see.”
